Mineral water, carbonated soft drink and alcoholic beverage is usually packaged in a variety of sizes of plastic (PET) bottles and it is essential that the caps on their bottles are easy to open, while at the same time applied tightly enough to ensure the bottles do not leak.

To guarantee the quality of their packaging, manufacturers of beverage should test their bottles compliance with domestic and international standards.

International Standards
ASTM D2063 — Standard Test Methods for Measurement of Torque Retention for Packages with Continuous Thread Closures Using Non-Automated (Manual) Torque Testing Equipment
ASTM D3198 — Standard Test Method for Application and Removal Torque of Threaded or Lug Style Closures
ASTM D3474 — Standard Practice for Calibration and Use of Torque Meters Used in Packaging Applications

We recommend Labthink NJY-20 Digital Torque Tester for this torque strength testing of bottle caps. The easy-to-use 20N.m capacity Torque Tester has proven to be a good choice for open force and close force of bottle capes.

Labthink NJY-20 is a precision instrument that measures OPEN and CLOSE torque strength for bottlers, food and beverage companies, and others who need to measure closure torque.

1) Its portable design make NJY-20 can be placed on the production line or into the laboratory

2) Peek Value real-time display on the LCD screen

3) Special design and precise sensor make sure the accuracy test results (up to 1% of reading) and high resolution 0.001Nm

Bottle cap torque force (bottle cap open and lock force) is one of the main factors affecting the sealing performance. Over torque force would bring great difficulties for open and winding up of bottle cup, and thus, reduce the convenience. Insufficient torque force would affect the seal performance of the container, and may further result in the leakage during transportation. Now, package design is designated to bring more convenience for fast consumption, and easy openness of bottle cap is one of the aims. When dealing such testing, GB/T17876-1999 is the standard, and craft-proof ring should be cut before testing.

The sealing performance of plastic bottle is the most important factor affecting package leakage and product deterioration. Excellent open easiness and sealing performance can be guaranteed through reasonable control of sealing performance and torque value. The barrier property of plastic bottles, including gas transmission quantity and water vapor transmission quantity, should also be controlled so as to guarantee the product quality during shelf-life period.
